Roles and Access

Introduction


We don't ship any custom app-specific roles with Discovery Admin! This eliminates the need for User Administration.


You can do everything you need to do with Discovery Admin, with the following out-of-the-box roles:

- discovery_admin (provides access to ALL Discovery Admin capabilities)

- itil (provides read-only access to Discovery Admin capabilities)


The out-of-the-box discovery_admin role is needed specifically for the Discovery Admin App, including its execution and administration.

The out-of-the-box itil role is needed to be able to view and manage Incidents (generated by Discovery Admin).


Since it is very common for:

- a ServiceNow Discovery Administrator to already have the discovery_admin and the itil role

- anyone working on Incidents to already have the itil role

... there is no additional User Administration needed.


Additional Considerations (for the itil role)


Additionally, Dashboards are created on either the Log Analysis Table or the Incident Table, both of which are accessible via the out-of-the-box itil role.

This way, Dashboards created for Discovery Admin don't need additional User Administration either.


(Starting with Discovery Admin v9.9) the itil role has expanded capabilities, enabling read-only access across all the features of Discovery Admin to support the concept of a Discovery Operator.


The itil role does not have access to the following Discovery Admin UI Actions:


UI Actions on Log Analysis:

  • { Quick Discovery } Runs Quick Discovery on the Device IP address on the form

  • { Add IP to Global Exclusion } Adds Device IP address on form to Global Exclusion

  • { Add Selected IPs to Global Exclusion } Adds IPs from the selected list to Global Exclusion


UI Actions on Scheduled Troubleshooting:

  • { Execute Now } Initiates new troubleshooting and navigates to its form

  • { Discovery Admin } Initiates new troubleshooting and navigates to its form


Discovery Status:

  • { Troubleshoot with Discovery Admin } Starts troubleshooting and navigates to its form

  • { Scheduled Troubleshooting } Creates Scheduled Troubleshooting and navigates to its form


Troubleshooting:

  • { Pause } Pauses active troubleshooting

  • { Resume } Resumes paused troubleshooting

  • { Cancel } Cancels troubleshooting


NOTE


The out-of-the-box admin role is ONLY needed to install and upgrade Discovery Admin
